Advice from our graduates and student officers to our first year students

Across LJMU we’ve been speaking to our students to find out what advice they would give to their first-year self.

One of our Student Experience Teams collected responses from students they had supported through their studies, and we also asked our graduating Class of 2024 for their advice during their summer graduation ceremonies. Here’s what they said.

On student life

“Just have fun, your first year goes by too quickly, so just enjoy it as much as you can.”

“Always just say yes to absolutely everything. Don’t ever say no because you’ll live to regret it. Always do as many sports as you can. Try to meet and talk to as many people as possible. Just get stuck in because I honestly think that’s so valuable.”

“Learn budgeting and don’t waste your money on constant takeaways just because you can!”

On your studies

“Even if you think you don't need to go to a lecture, go. It stops you getting in the habit of missing more in the future when you do need to go.”

“Work hard. Stay focused.”

“Stay on top of your work but make sure you enjoy it because the experience is incredible.”

Take every opportunity that you come across. Make the most out of the tech you have in uni, and for the love of God stick to a deadline - no last-minute writing and submitting! With that being said, don't stress, uni is not worth stressing about to the level that you think it is. You'll have a hard time, yes, but you have your lecturers to help you for sure. They love you and respect your ideas and ambitions, so take that to your advantage and go all out on the projects that you're passionate about!

“Take yourself seriously and believe in yourself - it's easier the earlier you start!”

“Put the hard work in and it will pay off.”

On friends and relationships

“Speak up, get out and make friends. Unfortunately, it’s always going to be hard but you have to fight what you’re going through otherwise you won’t make friends until the last year.”

“Don’t go too crazy at freshers, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to go out. It’s okay for people not to like you but don’t let them walk over you. DON’T DATE THAT GUY! Keep your friends close but don’t cry over drifting apart, your friends love you too and will want to stay in touch with you no matter what.”

Other tips from around the university

We also asked LJMU student support staff and our JMSU Student Officer Team to share their ‘words of wisdom’ for our new students.

Here’s their advice as you embark on your journey with LJMU:

Be yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for support when you need it

Here at LJMU students are at the heart of everything we do.

From the academics that teach you, to the help and support available from our Student Advice and Wellbeing teams, careers and employability support from Student Futures or Academic Achievement team based in our Libraries, there’s so many friendly faces ready to help, so just ask!

Get involved in over 200 sports, societies and communities

There are lots of ways to meet new people, take up a new hobby and make friends for life outside of your studies at John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU). Make sure you register your account today and make the most of your university experience.

Make the most of the gym and sport facilities

Here at LJMU we know how important exercise is to the health and wellbeing of our community, so our student gym membership options start from just £30 for a whole year.

Immerse yourself in JMSU events

There are over 30 Freshers events taking place throughout September 2024, from go karting to alpaca treks, trips to Alton Towers and yoga events. Not to mention Freshers Fair, the biggest event of the year. Sign up to some amazing activities both on campus and around the city and bag yourself some freebies from your Students’ Union.

Once you’re settled in, you can also apply to be a course rep, ensuring the student voice is heard for your school, plus there’s loads of volunteering opportunities across the city. What’s more, it’s a great way to meet people and make new friends who have similar interests to you.

Get active, get involved, make new friends, try new things and make yourself happy

From opportunities to study abroad to starting your own business or simply just exploring the top spots our wonderful city of Liverpool has to offer, the world is your oyster here at LJMU so make the most of all of the things you can get involved in alongside your studies.

And finally, a few words from your JMSU President…

Welcome and congratulations on being accepted into your new home! I and the other student officers can't wait to meet you and we hope to have a fantastic year with you. Remember, LJMU is very much what you make it! So, come and have some fun, why not sign up for something extraordinary?”

JMSU President 2024/25, Brenin Firsht
