Using e-bikes and e-scooters safely

Following a warning from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS), students, staff and visitors are reminded that electric bikes and scooters (apart from mobility aid devices) are not permitted on university premises.

MFRS has dealt with a spate of fires across Merseyside caused by electric bikes and scooters and is urging users to be aware of the risks involved in charging, storing and obtaining lithium-ion batteries.

While most e-bikes, e-scooters and their batteries are safe when used correctly, lithium-ion batteries can cause serious fires, particularly if of poor quality, when damaged or improperly used.

The advice from MFRS is to never charge e-bikes and e-scooters overnight, instead do this during the day and outside of the home where possible. You can find more advice here about how to safely buy and store those devices.

Remember:
The use of hoverboards, Segways, e-scooters, bicycles, roller skates / blades, skateboards and any other form of personal transport equipment (other than the use of mobility-aid devices) is prohibited on LJMU grounds and premises.

It is recommended that students check with their residential accommodation providers the particular rules on taking e-bikes and scooters into their premises.
