Scientific discoveries brought to a venue near you: Pint of Science Festival May 2025

Academics and postgraduate students from across LJMU will be sharing their research as part of the Pint of Science Festival programme this May.
The worldwide science festival, which brings researchers to local cafes, pubs and venues to share scientific discoveries, comes to Liverpool this month from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 May 2025.
LJMU is showcasing research from across its Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science and is organised by the Schools of Biological and Environmental Sciences (Dr Simone Dürr) and Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences (Dr Gavin McStay).
Pint of Science LJMU events at Murphy’s Distillery and Bar
Each LJMU-led event will be hosted at Murphy’s Distillery and Bar. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. There is no food available at the venue, but you are welcome to order food for delivery there.
Monday 19 May from 7pm to 9pm
Dr Paige de Polo, will be explaining what dinosaurs, humans and apples have in common; Dr Mirko Pegoraro will clarify how Count Vlad turns into Dracula; and Dr Robert Wynne will be discussing if brown trout should stay home or should go to the risky ocean.
Tuesday 20 May from 7pm to 9pm
Dr Satu will be discussing impact of phosphorus use in industry presenting a case study of matchstick manufacturing in the Victorian area; Dr Rachel Hagan will introduce human taste perception and facial expressions; and Dr Sulaf Assi, Charlotte Moss and Molly Thompson will be demonstrating the detection of fraud in everyday food and drink.
Wednesday 21 May from 7pm to 9pm
Tech in the Home, City and Space
Dr Aine McDermott will delve into cybersecurity, forensics and rise of deepfakes in our homes; Dr Layth Kraidi will bring us into the future with robot builders and digital twins in smart building construction; and Dr Helen Jermak and Chloe Miossec will catch the universe in action with the new 4-metre robotic Liverpool made telescope.
