Statement on UK Supreme Court ruling
A statement from the university:
On 16 April 2025, the UK Supreme Court clarified that, under the Equality Act 2010, the protected characteristic of sex refers to biological sex as recorded at birth. Importantly, the ruling also confirmed that transgender and non-binary people remain legally protected under the Act.
We understand this ruling will affect many in our community, especially our trans, non-binary and gender diverse staff and students, as well as their friends and families. LJMU remains committed to being a safe, inclusive and respectful place where everyone can be themselves.
If anyone is feeling unsettled or unsure in the light of this ruling, we encourage you to reach out to our support services or speak to a trusted contact. Further information for students and staff is provided below.
We recognise that people will hold a range of views on this topic. At LJMU, we value respectful dialogue and believe in listening to different perspectives with empathy and understanding. However, we will not tolerate any use of this ruling to harm, exclude, or target others.
As a university, we are legally required to follow the law and will continue to do so. Like many institutions, we await further guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on how this ruling should be applied. There are currently no changes to LJMU policies, but any required updates will be reflected in our policies and shared via the staff and student news webpages and the Policy Centre.
We are working closely with our Staff Networks, JMSU, and the wider LJMU community to listen, respond, and ensure support is available to all.
Our values have not changed. Inclusion and Respect Always remain at the heart of who we are and everything we do.
Support available for students and staff:
Students can seek support from the Student Wellbeing team, their Personal Tutor or JMSU. JMSU also has an LGBTQIA+ Student Society which provides ongoing social opportunities throughout the year.
Staff can speak to a member of the Diversity and Inclusion team for further advice and guidance, as well as their HR Business Partner. They can also access emotional support through our Employee Assistance Programme.
Our LGBTQIA+ Staff Network organises network and social activities throughout the academic year and welcomes staff who identify as gay, bisexual, trans and any other minoritised sexual or gender identity. The network provides a space to ensure that colleagues are represented and feel valued and supported.
