What's it like studying a Foundation Year?



We sat down with Muller, a student who applied to study International Relations and Politics, BA (Hons) at Liverpool John Moores University through Clearing to find out what studying a foundation year as part of your degree is really like…

As a Foundation Year student in International Relations and Politics, can you tell us about your experience so far?

My time during the Foundation Year at LJMU has truly been enriching and transformative. I felt compelled to share my positive experiences because the year has had such a significant impact on me.

That’s wonderful to hear. What aspects of the Foundation Year stood out to you the most?

Without a doubt, the academic support was exceptional. The curriculum was comprehensive, giving me a solid foundation for my studies. It covered essential concepts and skills that are critical in my field. The faculty members were not just knowledgeable, but also incredibly approachable. They were always ready to provide guidance and support whenever I needed it, which made a huge difference in my learning experience.

It sounds like the University’s approach really helped you. How did the course content of the Foundation Year influence your studies?

The diversity of subjects covered was another highlight for me. It allowed me to explore various areas of interest, which was invaluable in helping me discover my true passion. The multidisciplinary approach broadened my perspective and the interactive teaching methods, along with engaging classroom discussions, created a stimulating learning environment. It really encouraged critical thinking and collaboration, which I found very rewarding.

The university has undergone a lot of transformation in terms of the facilities and resources available to students. Is this something that you’ve noticed in your experience at LJMU?

Absolutely. The university's facilities were crucial in enhancing my educational experience. The well-equipped libraries, for example, were instrumental in my research and completing assignments. Additionally, the workshops and seminars offered by the university provided opportunities to acquire practical skills and stay updated with the latest developments in my field. These resources really complemented the academic support and helped me feel prepared for what’s to come.

It sounds like you’ve had an amazing journey so far – so happy to hear you’re going to be progressing on to the next part of your undergraduate degree here! How would you sum up your Foundation Year experience at LJMU?

In a word, fulfilling. The Foundation Year at LJMU has been a positive and empowering journey. I’m incredibly grateful for the knowledge, skills, and experiences I’ve gained. They’ve set me up well for the challenges and opportunities ahead in both my academic and professional life.
