I am an academic, artist and ethnographer specialising in digital art. I hold a practice-led PhD and, using a range of research methods, I create exhibitions, films, animations, and written publications that deconstruct preconceived ideas about class and race in art and design, music and the moving image. Those skills that I gained over the years, are being also applied to collaborative projects of health and life science, helping the audience to understand complex data sets, or by simply engaging with the public with the use of creative outputs.
Over the last decade, I have taught students from multiple disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate levels including students of Graphic Design & Illustration, Fashion and Architecture, among others and I am also part of a supervisory team of PhD students. I have a particular pedagogical interest in teaching students how to create and contextualise their practice promoting positive values and helping disadvantaged communities. This pedagogical interest reflects my research interests (including my PhD), published outputs and freelance work for industry. More specifically, I lead most of the theory contents in L4 and also contribute to studio module/projects. As an example of my passion for teaching, in 2019, I received the LJMU Teaching and Learning Excellence Award given to one person per faculty in this category.
Currently, I am the EDI (equality diversity and inclusion) coordinator of the school of art and design. My role aims to eradicate prejudice and discrimination and ensure fair treatment and opportunities for all students and staff. This role, makes me appreciate even more the need for an inclusive and ethical learning environment, where all students and staff can better themselves, and remove preconceived hierarchical prejudices, regardless of their personal circumstances.
