Faculty of Engineering and Technology

Dr Georgios (George) Nikitas is Senior Lecturer in Geotechnics and he has been at the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment at Liverpool John Moores University since November 2020. Prior to that he held the post of Experimental Officer in Geotechnics at the University of Surrey, while at the same time he was studying for his PhD degree. Besides the lab-based work, he was also actively involved in the education process of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, at University of Surrey, by teaching several modules including Surveying, Design and Advanced Geotechnics. Before his time at the University of Surrey, Dr Nikitas has been a teaching assistant at the University of Bristol, while studying for his MSc by research, funded by EPSRC . His work at the University of Bristol involved the use of the largest shaking table in the UK (BLADE facilities) to test the seismic behavior of an innovative foundation system utilizing the rubber from waste tires.

His main research interests concern experimental geotechnics and soil-structure interaction for various types of structures. His focus is to better understand the soil-structure interaction of offshore wind turbines and what is the long-term effect of loading cycles on soil supporting these through experimental modelling. Besides Offshore Wind Turbines, Dr Nikitas has worked in a range of topics, including among others 1g dynamic experiments, soil element testing, seismic resilience and monitoring of structures during earthquakes, soil improvement techniques and many more. Some key indicative areas of his current research are: Long term performance of Offshore Wind Turbines; Liquefaction mitigation techniques for residential buildings and pipelines; Development of apparatus for advanced soil element testing; Development of cost-effective structural health monitoring systems; Reuse of waste materials in civil engineering applications

The research portfolio of Dr Nikitas contains more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in world-leading scientific journals, academic conferences and books.

Dr Nikitas is accepting candidates for PhD.
