I started my nursing journey abroad on 18/04/1985 as a student nurse and qualified as a Nigerian Registered Nurse in 1988 following a general nurse training which exposed me to all fields of nursing including Public Health through practice placements. I became a Nigerian Registered Midwife in 1990; and then clinically practised as a staff nurse midwife (including Home visit nurse, Travel nurse, Family planning coordinator, and Nurse educator) in varieties of settings abroad including government, private, and oil company hospitals/Schools and health settings before relocating to the UK in 2005.
I became a UK qualified nurse in September 2006 following the completion of my Oversea Nurse Programme (ONP) referred to then as ‘Adaptation’; which was in a nursing home. In the UK I have actively practised within private and NHS hospitals with a wealth of experiences. My last 15 years before becoming a university senior lecturer was in NHS working as a staff nurse in a colorectal ward carrying out general nursing care of surgical inpatients including those on end of life; supporting patients with their activities of daily living; handling ward emergencies and deteriorating patients; communicating with patients and families, designing and implementing patient care plans; manging and administering medications (oral, intravenous, and central line, Hickman and PICC lines). I am also experienced in Parenteral feeding such as TPN, PEG, PEC and JEJ feedings, patient-controlled analgesia (PCEA, PCA and Bomb), stoma care, wound dressing, and catheterisation. I have also provided support and supervision for health care professionals on practice placement and preceptorship to newly qualified nurses; and worked with other professionals of the multidisciplinary team, including organising and chairing ward and departmental meetings.
