Sam holds practitioner status on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr) and is a Performance Nutrition consultant/advisor for the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, supporting professional female football players. Sam's current research addresses female athlete health and performance, supplementation, and alternative protein sources (e.g. cricket protein). Sam has secured external funding, supervised PhD students through to completion and has worked with key stakeholders such as UEFA (e.g. the #WePlayStrong campaign, which is aimed at transforming perceptions of women's football and encouraging girls to take up and continue playing the game). She also serves on the Journal Editorial Board for Performance Nutrition. Previously, Sam led the programme of sports science support for the England Handball Association. Her PhD assessed the physical, physiological and performance characteristics of national team players.
