1. More Sumatran orangutans found in the wild than expected

   Researchers have discovered c.14,600 animals still live in the wild today - 8,000 more than expected.

5. Journalism programmes receive NCTJ award for equality, diversity and inclusion

   The award recognises LJMU’s work on diversity and inclusion including the creation of a Diversity Reporting Guide and a planned Diversity in Journalism Teaching symposium.

6. Gamma-ray burst captured in unprecedented detail

   An international team including LJMU and led by University of Maryland has constructed one of the most detailed descriptions of a gamma-ray burst to date.

7. Astrophysics Research Institute PhD student receives only UK award from NASA

   LJMU has the highest number of Hubble Fellowships in the UK, as one of their latest awards goes to an Astrophysics Research Institute student straight out of her PhD. Dr Emma Beasor was also the only UK student awarded a Fellowship this year.

8. LJMU receives Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence and National Teaching Fellowship

   LJMU is one of 15 teams to win the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) and an LJMU academic has also been awarded one of 54 National Teaching Fellows (NTF). Dr Philip Denton, Principal Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, is the recipient of the NTF and the paramedic team at LJMU’s Schools of Nursing and Allied Health received the CATE.

9. Ambassador Fellow, Phil Redmond, receives Freedom of Liverpool

   LJMU Ambassador Fellow, Professor Phil Redmond CBE, will today (Friday, 2 November) be awarded the Freedom of Liverpool – the city’s highest civic honour.

10. School of Nursing and Allied Health receives £250,000 from ESRC

    The School of Nursing and Allied Health has been awarded £250,000 from the prestigious Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for a project which will examine the rights of healthcare practitioners in relation to abortion.
