As we celebrate our Bicentenary in 2023, we shine a light on 200 of the many thousands of outstanding people, from the earliest days of the Mechanics Institute in 1823 up to this very moment, who have shaped and been shaped by this university.
A prominent figure in the founding of the Liverpool Mechanics’ Institute, bringing accessible education to the working classes.
Niamh is a professional footballer and was in the history making Lionesses squad, the England women’s football team, that made it to the final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She’s an alumna from our School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and was supported during her studies as a Sports Scholar.
Dr Sasha Kosanic is an interdisciplinary scientist whose research focuses on answering complex questions about climate change and the impact it is having on nature and societies. She is also an advocate for inclusion in education, as a former Paralympian and a scientist living with Cerebral Palsy, she looks to highlight inequalities wherever she finds them and to drive forwards change in research and academia.
Lottie is undertaking her master’s in pharmacy at LJMU and juggles her studies alongside work at a local pharmacy, helping the community of Liverpool while furthering her own skills.
Elysia is a PhD researcher with LJMU’s internationally renowned Face Lab, a research group focusing on facial depiction and representation, at the interface of art and science.
Sean studied law at Liverpool Polytechnic and was President of the Student’s Union. He has since gone on to become a BBC journalist, reporting on politics and parliament, often hosting LJMU students at the BBC and sharing career insights.
