“When I joined the LJMU Racing Team I started as a general assistant, helping out where I could. By the end, I was joint manager, working with four others to deliver everything necessary to design, build and race a single-seater. The whole experience was incredible.
“I can’t recommend it enough. In 2012, we took our car to Spain to compete. I did the accelerator test. Our car managed nought to 60 in four seconds. The feeling is like nothing else. Your body shakes. It’s a total explosion of your senses. You can’t lift your head off the seat. It’s hot, loud and fun.”
I work with people from the best universities in the world and students from LJMU stand toe-to-toe with them. We actually blow other graduates out of the water.
"I did both my dissertations on the car. In my first dissertation, I looked at using accelerometer to measure the dynamics of the car. In the second, I developed carbon fibre wishbones.
“I now help judge Formula Student England. It’s great to see the young students coming through. They’re pushing the standards higher and higher each year.
“I’m now a Mechanical Design Engineer at Sellafield – a nuclear waste management company. I’ve also been awarded the UK Nuclear Graduate of the Year and the Sellafield Ltd Graduate of the Year. Being part of the LJMU Racing Team has definitely helped me in the world of work and I couldn’t recommend it to students enough.”
Employers use participation in activities such as Formula Student to identify potential employees. Success in this competition raises our University's profile both nationally and internationally and demonstrates the quality of our graduates.
