Law student duo secure prestigious Anthony Walker Bursary Scheme
Two School of Law students are celebrating their success after securing places on the prestigious Anthony Walker Bursary Scheme.
Abighail Wiredu Adutwumwaa and Celestine Feeney, both third year (level six) students within LJMU’s School of Law, have secured the postgraduate award from the Anthony Walker Bursary Scheme.
The positive action scheme, ring-fenced to students from a Black, Asian and minority ethnic background, is a collaborative programme between the Anthony Walker Foundation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the National Black Crown Prosecution Association (NBCPA), aimed at helping to address the under representation of ethnic minority staff across the North West and Mersey Cheshire.
Following the award to Abighail and Celestine, the bursary scheme will contribute towards course fees; provide each bursary recipient with support throughout their studies including a mentor provided by the NBCPA and a CPS mentor; access to NBCPA initiatives and a chance to attend an NBCPA board meeting; plus shadowing opportunities, court observation as well as an introduction to career pathways such as the Legal Trainee Scheme and bespoke development courses developed by the Learning and Development team.

On being awarded the bursary, Celestine said:
“With support of the Anthony Walker Bursary, I am empowered to continue my studies as a testament to his legacy. I was mentored by the formidable staff at LJMU in applying for this bursary and they encouraged me in my application. This bursary is not just monetary assistance but it will enable me to educate people about the injustices that take place within our criminal justice system. It's important to use education as a tool for change, as he would have done, rather than merely obtaining one."
Abighail said:
“I could not be more grateful and proud as I have been offered a sponsorship under the CPS Anthony Walker Bursary Scheme. This incredible opportunity means way more than a financial support. It is a true recognition of my hard work and dedication to the journey building my law career and making a change. For my future career, this means gaining invaluable legal experience and an insight into the Justice System. I am truly honoured to be selected among many other talented individuals. However, achieving this would have not been possible without the great support I received from Linda Graham, Student Futures and LJMU’s School of Law throughout the application process. It has been an exciting journey. Now, I am looking forward to what the future holds.”
Both students were supported in their applications by the School of Law and the LJMU Student Futures team.
