School pupils learn about law at LJMU
Pupils from schools across the Liverpool City Region have discovered more about the legal profession thanks to an initiative from LJMU.
Law Factor brought together 25 schoolchildren for a five-week programme aimed at increasing the diversity of young people who study and, ultimately, practice law.
The range of activity was managed by the university’s Outreach team in partnership with Liverpool-based law firm, DWF.
The Year 10 pupils took part in a variety of sessions focusing on areas such as negotiation, debate, and networking, supported by internal and external speakers, from LJMU’s School of Law, legal team, JMSU Law Society and the Anthony Walker Foundation.
The programme is part of LJMU’s commitment to supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their potential. Pupils were selected based on widening participation criteria, including first generation, low socio-economic background and/or from an ethnic minority group.
"An absolute pleasure"
Helen Redmond, DWF Solicitor and Law Factor Lead, said: “It is so rewarding to be back in person with this year's Law Factor programme.
“It was great to see how engaged the students were and an absolute pleasure to work with LJMU again to deliver a very successful programme covering various topics and activities.
“The positivity of being involved and thinking of new ways to get information and experience to the pupils has brightened my Mondays considerably!”
"An amazing experience"
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive with many echoing the thoughts of Year 10 pupils below:
“An amazing experience that was worth taking and would take again.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed this programme and would highly recommend to others curious on whether to join. I have gained an insight into professions in law and the skills necessary to achieve them”.
“I’ve learnt about a range of different ways to get into law like apprenticeships or the university route and especially DWF.”
Pupils who took part in Law Factor will be welcomed back on campus in May to spend the day with LJMU’s School of Law.
