Oliver gets 'best of both worlds' with Degree Apprenticeship

Oliver Farnworth loves the idea of designing something and then seeing it built in real life!

Talented in science and maths at school, the 24-year-old followed his passion by joining an engineering firm straight from college.

Today he graduates in BEng Civil Engineering, achieved while still employed at the same company, the Liverpool-based highways engineers Flinders Chase.

Oliver chose a Degree Apprenticeship, allowing him to study day-release from work and have his university fees paid for.

The 24-year-old from Wigan is one of a growing cadre of college leavers who want to work but also understand how a degree can open doors in their future career.

Many call it ‘the best of both worlds’ but it is hard work as Oliver’s delight attests at attending today’s (July 11) Graduation Ceremony for the School of Engineering. He said: “It feels great! It’s nice to see all the hard work pay off and to be rewarded with a brilliant result.”

The former Lowton C of E High pupil and St John Rigby College graduate added: “The Degree Apprenticeship means I can get academic engineering knowledge and apply that to my job while the job experience helps me better understand some of the academic aspects. It works both ways, which is brilliant.”

Part of his experience at work has actually been working on one of LJMU’s award-winning buildings – the Student Life at Copperas Hill.

Oliver’s goal is to go on to complete a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering with the hope of becoming a Chartered Engineer “relatively soon”!

He says he’d recommend a Degree Apprenticeship to anyone because of the blend of experience and knowledge you get: “It can really improve you as an engineer, you have a clear route into the industry and a wealth of experience at the end of your degree!”

Oliver Farnworth was among 1,500 graduating on Thursday, 11 July from LJMU’s Schools of Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, Astrophysics Research Institute, Civil Engineering and Built Environment, Nursing and Allied Health, Psychology and Public and Allied Health.
