Joint statement from LJMU and JMSU

We are grateful to everyone, both students and staff, who has been in touch over the past few days following the formation of a pro-life society. The university and Students’ Union (JMSU) operate in an open and diverse environment and welcome all feedback. We understand the concerns that have been expressed and recognise that the existence of this society is prompting questions about how we can have allowed it space in our community.

The Education (No. 2) Act 1986 places a legal duty on universities and students’ unions to ensure freedom of speech for students, employees and visiting speakers. This means that our universities must allow for the lawful expression of views on university campus and must protect the rights of students and staff to hold beliefs that may be opposed to the beliefs and ideas of others.

We recognise the right of students to form societies that reflect their diverse interests, beliefs and values and we provide a safe space to explore different ideas and hear differing opinions. We encourage informed and respectful debate on our campus as well as the right for peaceful and reflective protest. The university and JMSU align our approach under a Respect Always charter

When approving student societies, JMSU considers a range of measures and whether the proposed society’s activities are lawful. Provided that the society complies with these requirements JMSU is obliged to endorse its affiliation, which is the case with the pro-life society. Therefore, JMSU is unable to reject an application for a student group on the basis of the group’s ideas or views, unless those opinions break the law.

We understand the concerns raised about women’s rights on campus and we maintain our support and commitment to women’s rights. We condemn any form of harassment or abuse, whether this appears online or in person and the intimidation and bullying of individuals who hold beliefs which are counter to others will not be tolerated. We uphold the rights of our communities to express freely their ideas and opinions as long as they fall within the limits of the law.

We want everyone in our community to feel safe and supported so please access the services available to seek help or report any incidents. Please see the following links which detail our services:
