25th Annual GP2A Medicinal Chemistry Conference
Liverpool John Moores University is proud to host the 25th GP2A Medicinal Chemistry Conference
Conference overview
The 25th Annual Groupement des Pharmacochimistes de l’Arc Atlantique (GP2A) will be held at the Redmonds Building of LJMU on 31 August and 1 September 2017. The aim of the conference is to exchange ideas and experiences between laboratory heads (Principal Investigators), postdocs and research students. All will have the opportunity to present and discuss their latest research through invited lectures, oral communications and posters.
Perhaps the most important role of the Conference is to provide young scientists from different countries and various medicinal chemical specialities to share and compare experiences informally.
Background to GP2A
The GP2A is a group of academic medicinal chemists working in universities and research institutes near the western coast of Europe (the “Atlantic Arc”). It was founded in 1992 with the aim of bringing together researchers in this area for the exchange of ideas and experience. Historically, it has included members from France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and the United Kingdom but in recent years it has expanded both geographically and in terms of the research fields covered.
The aim is exchange of ideas and experience. This is achieved in two ways, focussed conferences and facilitation of short exchange visits. Each year, we hold a meeting designed to bring together not only laboratory heads (Principal Investigators) but also postdocs and postgraduate research students (PhD students). At these meetings, all have the opportunity to present and discuss their latest research through invited lectures, oral communications and posters. The most important role of the meetings, though, is that young scientists from different countries and various medicinal chemical specialities share and compare experiences informally. PhD students and postdocs from all these countries appreciate that they are all seeking the same goals, scientifically and for their careers, and are facing similar challenges. Interactions within GP2A also facilitate short visits by students to other member laboratories to learn techniques and gain new experiences.
The annual conference is held at a different member institution each year, moving from France to UK to Ireland and, in the future, to other countries. This year, the historical port city of Liverpool, in the North-West of England, was chosen as the venue for the conference on 31 August and 1 September 2017. The host university is Liverpool John Moores University, founded in 1823 as the Mechanics School of Arts and developed into its present status in 1992. It is home to the long-established School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. We look forward to welcoming medicinal chemists new and old, from all related areas of science and from the Atlantic Arc, however broadly it is defined.
