Local black businesses and community organisations

As a team within LJMU we have vast collaboration with communities and businesses within and externally, to ensure that people are supported to join the University community, either as students or staff and, provide a welcoming environment which will meet the cultural, linguistic, and spiritual needs of our staff and student communities. Recent investments happening in Liverpool city region make this an exciting time to live and work in Liverpool.

The £2.3m Liverpool City Race Equality Hub has recently been established by Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region. This Hub builds upon the city region’s reputation for social justice and equality, with its primary purpose is to tackle systemic injustice and inequality and drive forward positive change for our ethniemployees and residents. We believe having easier access to culturally relevant services and local businesses is important to supporting the black community.

Our team members have worked closely to develop many project initiatives with community groups and LJMU. LJMU’s Associate Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Moni Akinsanya, organised various women’s programmes during lockdown to empower particularly women of colour and faith, some of which attracted over 200 women from different parts of the world.

“From working with Race Equality Hub and together with our communities, I am confident the Hub will support employers and agencies to enable Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic businesses to thrive.

This project is one of its kind and I am excited to watch this incredible team improve opportunities for all our communities’ members.”
