Educational Psychology

The Educational Psychology Research Group is comprised researchers who use psychological theory and perspectives to understand and positively influence education and educational phenomena at all ages and stages and through the lifespan. Our interests focus on the following areas:

  • Learner subjectivity, self-beliefs, and engagement.
  • Creating motivationally intelligent classrooms.
  • The role of academic emotions in learning and achievement.
  • Supporting learners’ emotional development (as a precursor to self-regulation of learning).
  • Gender and socio-economic deprivation barriers to educational participation.
  • Supporting under-represented groups to participate in education.
  • Well-being and mental health in education.
  • Test/exam anxiety assessment and intervention.

Members of our group are active in local, national, and international networks. Professor Putwain is Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Educational Psychology and Dr Nicholson is a deputy editor, Dr Wood is a deputy editor for Education 3-13, Dr Peiser is on the editorial board for the TEAN journal. Dr Gallard is part of the steering group of the National Literacy Trust ‘New Chapters’ funded control trial education intervention to improve behavioural difficulties for young people on remand in UK secure units.
