About the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences

Since 1975, Liverpool John Moores University have led sport and exercise sciences. Our work began with the world’s first sports science degree.

We are now a recognised School with strong teaching, research and partnerships.

Our aim is to improve knowledge, support our communities and prepare the next generation of professionals.

As we move beyond our 50-year anniversary, we will build on our strengths and keep shaping the future of sport science.

Our heritage and impact

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences was the first institution in the world to offer a single honours degree in Sport Science in 1975. In 1998, we also became the first academic department to introduce a single honours degree in Science and Football.

We continue to be at the forefront of innovation in sport and exercise sciences. The School is recognised as a world-leading department. In 2024, we were awarded Athena SWAN Silver status. This reflects our commitment to gender equality and supports equal opportunity for all.

We focus on practical experience and help students build strong critical thinking skills. This supports their professional practice, improves performance and enhances lives.

Our work spans cellular, molecular and clinical sciences. We work across all stages of life. This ranges from early years to later years. Our focus includes health, nutrition and elite sport.

Students learn to understand theory first. They are then encouraged to challenge and develop it. This applies across sport, physical activity, exercise, nutrition and health.

We offer an innovative, research-led learning experience. It is strongly focused on employability. Students are challenged but well supported throughout.
