20 years of RISES

Celebrating 20 years of PhD students from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences

Founded in 1997, the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (RISES) is the research hub of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University.

Built on a long tradition of innovation in sport science, the Institute was established to support ambitious research and develop future leaders in the field.

Twenty years on, RISES is recognised as the UK’s leading centre for sport and exercise sciences research, ranked first in REF 2014 for research quality, with 97% of its work rated world-leading or internationally excellent.

To mark this anniversary, 20 Years, 20 Stories celebrates the PhD students who have shaped the Institute’s success. From around 250 PhD graduates between 1997 and 2017, one graduate from each year was invited to share their story, reflecting on their research, their careers, and their personal development.

Together, these stories show the breadth of research at RISES and the lasting impact of its postgraduate community on sport and exercise science, both at LJMU and beyond.

We would like to thank the twenty individuals that have agreed to share their stories but also the hundreds of postgraduate students that contributed to the vibrant research environment at RISES.

We hope that you will find their experiences and stories interesting, compelling and inspirational.

Introduced by Professor Barry Drust

Professor Barry Drust completed his PhD in 1997 and offers a unique perspective as both one of the Institute’s earliest doctoral graduates and a senior figure in sport and exercise science. His PhD examined the metabolic responses to soccer-specific intermittent exercise, research that shaped his scientific thinking and future career.

He reflects on how his time at RISES transformed both his professional direction and personal outlook. Alongside developing deep subject knowledge, his PhD provided formative experiences through collaboration, international travel, and close work with fellow students and staff.

He credits the influence of Professor Tom Reilly in particular for instilling values of discipline, curiosity and commitment to developing others.

Barry’s story highlights how RISES has not only advanced scientific knowledge, but also shaped generations of researchers through mentorship, collaboration and a strong research culture.
