SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation
One in three people live without sanitation. This is causing unnecessary disease and death. Although huge strides have been made with access to clean drinking water, lack of sanitation is undermining these advances. If we provide affordable equipment and education in hygiene practices, we can stop this senseless suffering and loss of life.
At LJMU, we’re making efforts to address our water usage by installing efficient water dispensers, harvesting rainwater and using low-flush toilets in our buildings across campuses. Regionally, we are promoting sustainable energy on Hilbre Island and internationally we are proud to champion the voices of islanders in the Philippines.
Highlights
Free water dispensers
Our free water dispensers encourage students to refill bottles, helping to reduce single-use plastics and associated scope 3 carbon emissions.
Clean beaches
Clean-ups at Crosby Beach and Sefton Park focus on removing litter and invasive plant species, which can harm water quality and disrupt wildlife.
Spotlight on pollutants
We’re informing policymakers and contribution to global reduction efforts of PFAS and other inviable pollutants.
Biodiversity showcase
Our participation in Liverpool event Dockwatch showcases biodiversity while raising awareness of environmental issues.
